Japan Night Ink and Strings Live Japanese Calligraphy, Tsugaru Shamisen and Sake Experience in the City of London

27 June @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Japan Night Ink and Strings

– Live Japanese Calligraphy, Tsugaru Shamisen and Sake Experience-

Experience an unforgettable evening of Japanese culture, live performance, and atmosphere in the heart of the City of London this summer.

Taking place inside the historic St Katharine Cree Church near Liverpool Street, “Japan Night Ink and Strings” is a one night cultural event combining live Japanese calligraphy, traditional Tsugaru shamisen music, and selected premium Japanese sake in a uniquely immersive setting.

The event features internationally acclaimed Japanese calligraphy artist Setsuhi Shiraishi, whose dynamic live performances have captivated audiences across Japan, Europe, and beyond. Known for blending traditional Japanese calligraphy with music, contemporary art, and performance, Shiraishi has performed internationally including at the Milan Expo, the Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, and Japan House at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Joining her is London based Tsugaru shamisen musician Hibiki Ichikawa, an internationally recognised performer known for bringing the powerful and expressive sound of the shamisen to audiences across the UK and Europe. Hibiki has collaborated with musicians and artists across multiple disciplines and also contributed to the soundtrack recording for the BAFTA winning animated film “Kubo and the Two Strings”.

Together, the two artists create a powerful live performance where sound, movement, and ink interact in real time. Each brushstroke responds to rhythm and emotion, transforming the performance into a living piece of art unfolding before the audience.

Set within the atmospheric surroundings of one of the City’s most beautiful historic churches, the evening offers a rare opportunity to experience contemporary Japanese culture in a deeply intimate and immersive way.

Guests will also be able to enjoy premium Japanese sake and Japanese beer available for purchase throughout the evening. A small selection of Japanese snacks and cultural items will also be available, allowing visitors to further experience the atmosphere of a Japanese inspired night in London.

Whether you are interested in Japanese culture, live music, visual art, or simply looking for a unique London evening experience, Japan Night Ink and Strings promises a memorable night unlike anything else in the city this summer.
