Japan Night Ink and Strings Live Japanese Calligraphy Tsugaru Shamisen and Sake Experience in London

Experience a unique evening of Japanese art, music and atmosphere at the historic Church of St Katharine Cree in the heart of the City of London.

Japan Night Ink and Strings is a special one night cultural event bringing together live Japanese calligraphy, traditional Tsugaru shamisen music and selected premium Japanese sake in an immersive church setting.

The evening will feature internationally acclaimed Japanese calligraphy artist Setsuhi Shiraishi, performing live alongside London based Tsugaru shamisen musician Hibiki Ichikawa. Together they create a powerful performance where movement, sound and ink interact in real time.

Setsuhi Shiraishi is known for transforming traditional Japanese calligraphy into contemporary live art. Her work has been presented internationally, including performances connected to the Paris Olympics, Expo Milano and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. This event marks her first live performance in London.

Hibiki Ichikawa is one of the leading Tsugaru shamisen performers based in the UK, regularly performing across Europe. His dynamic and expressive playing style combines the traditional sounds of Japan with contemporary energy and atmosphere. He also contributed to the soundtrack recording of the BAFTA winning film Kubo and the Two Strings.

Set inside the atmospheric surroundings of St Katharine Cree Church, the event offers audiences the opportunity to experience Japanese culture in a unique and intimate way. Guests will be able to enjoy selected premium Japanese sake and Japanese beer throughout the evening while watching the live performance unfold.

A small selection of Japanese snacks and cultural items will also be available for purchase.

Whether you are interested in Japanese culture, live music, visual art or immersive cultural experiences, this special event offers a rare opportunity to experience the interaction between Japanese tradition and contemporary performance art in London.
