This December a series of Christmas concerts will be getting audiences into the festive swing of things with congregational carols, enchanting classical music and the atmospheric glow of candlelight.
The doors to Christmas By Candlelight at the Freemasons’ Hall will first open on the evening of December 4th, inviting in ticket-holders to escape the crisp winter night air and settle into seats under the painted celestial skies of The Grand Temple.
The first concert to take place will be a magical performance of Handel’s greatest oratorio, complete with the angelic voices of the English Chamber Choir and the musical talents of Belmont Ensemble of London and Trafalgar Sinfonia. When the familiar words of the Hallelujah Chorus echo in the palatial space and the conductor’s baton starts to swish with gusto, you won’t be able to resist the Christmas spirit.
In the following weeks, on December 11th, 18th and 19th, there’ll be a chance to hum along to all your favourite Christmas Carols. Each of the Saturdays will have two concerts: one at the earlier time of 5pm – where children will be in their element and adults will be flashing back to those simpler times mumbling along at school – with songs such as Away in a Manger, Ding Dong Merrily On High, Jingle Bells and many more performed over the course of an hour. Another, at 7.30pm – when the little ones are ready for bed – where the classics will return for a longer duration of 90 minutes. If you fancy witnessing additional renditions of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, make sure you bag tickets for the final Sunday performance.
Each concert will be illuminated by candlelight which will perfectly highlight the ornate Art Deco features of The Grand Temple, ensuring the evening will be one to remember.
