A New National Gallery Exhibition Is Displaying Vincent Van Gogh’s Most Famous Artworks In A ‘Once In A Century’ Show

Even if you don’t think you can name any famous artists, you almost certainly know who Vincent Van Gogh is. And even if you don’t think you can call to mind any specific famous paintings, you would almost certainly recognise his singular artistic style. Whether it’s ‘The Starry Night’, ‘Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers’, or his iconic self-portraits, Van Gogh’s artworks are amongst the most famous in the world. And now, a new “once-in-a-century exhibition” has brought the artist’s most beloved and famous pieces together under one roof.

‘Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers’ opened at London’s National Gallery on September 14. The huge celebration of the artist’s work also coincides neatly with the gallery’s 200th (!) birthday. And it’s a suitably monumental exhibition for the momentous bicentenary.

The career-spanning show features the “most loved of Van Gogh’s paintings from across the globe, some of which are rarely seen in public.”  These include many of the works he created while living in Arles and Saint-Rémy – a time that influenced his subsequent artworks greatly – and his “extraordinary drawings”.

In total, there are over 60 Van Gogh works to marvel at in the exhibition. Among the highlights are:

  •  ‘Starry Night over the Rhône’, 1888
  •  ‘Self-portrait’, 1889
  • two pieces from the ‘Sunflowers’ series
  •  ‘The Bedroom’, 1889
  • and much more.
